One thing this Mama does not like is when her babies are sick, from runny noses to fever. Seeing your kids sick isn’t fun and honestly it can also be tough. I wish this post was titled “ how I keep my kids from getting sick” but the reality is, my kids love to play with their friends, they love the park, they love the dirt and one of them loves to put their thumb in her mouth. So sickness is bound to hit our home every once in a while. Before I get to the list of remedies we have used in our home, I must remind you that I am not a doctor, so please always check with your child’s doctor on what they say is the best way to care for your children. Lastly Honey is not considered safe for children under the age of one, as it can lead to botulism, so like stated above, always check with your child’s doctor before trying any new remedies for them.
With that said, here is a list of 5 ways we help our kids to quickly recover from sickness or make the symptoms of it a little more bearable.
1.) Change all bedding
It is said that symptoms tend to show up about one to three days after an illness has entered the body. So to give my little ones a chance to fully recover, I like to remove all bedding and give it a good clean in the washer machine in hot water to kill any germs. I particularly like to use fragrance free detergent especially for them but if that is not something you have on hand, consider setting your washer to do a double rinse. This way you are reducing a possible irritant that might help you reduce the coughing and sneezing symptoms.
2. Cut an Onion
I might sound crazy but TikTok made me do it! And it has worked. Three different onion tricks and I can confirm two of the three have worked like a charm for us. One is cutting a red, yellow or white onion, placing it in a bowl and placing it under your child’s bed. The trick to this is that we elevate our child’s head a bit to help allow their nostrils to drain and also in hopes of helping them not chock from all the drainage, because the onions will open up their nostrils to help them breath. Yes, the room will reek of onions but that smell will go away once they are removed within a day or two. Second Onion trick, slice onions and place in a jar, cover with raw honey and seal, let it rest overnight and then the honey becomes like a loose liquid. They say this is a “homemade cough syrup”. We did give this to our girls in hopes of it helping their coughs but I can’t confirm it got rid of the cough but it did help it subside. Last onion trick and this one has to be my absolute favorite, sliced onion in a sock, it is said to draw out any illness from the body and the few times we’ve done it. It has worked like a charm, like the next morning fevers and illnesses have been gone or nearly non-existent.
3.) Fresh Air
There isn’t much to explain here but Vitamin D is always good if you can get some sunlight, but fresh air is always great for a literal breath of fresh air. Have you ever just laid in bed all day in your room filled with illness and then you finally get up and open a window or your front door and realize how much sitting in your sickness makes you feel ill,Fresh air feels like a refresher. I like to give our little ones a short but sweet amount of time outside, to let them breathe in new air and to have a change of scenery when they are feeling under the weather.
4.) Citrus Sips
Hear me out, I love to up my kid’s Vitamin C with Oranges & Broccoli. The deal is sometimes it’s not enough to keep their immune system up to fight off, random colds, flu’s or other viruses going around. So I turn to an old family recipe, I slice any citrus fruits I have and place them in a pot, boil with a cup of water. I reduce the heat to about medium after it’s boiled for about 5 min. I then allow the citrus to cook until the fruit is almost falling apart. I then strain the citrus out and serve my little one(s) a cup or a syringe with the cooled citrus juice. I sometimes add honey if it’s overwhelmingly tart but this helps to knock out the sickness REAL quick and soothes the throat.
5.) Snuggles & Rest
Our kids need extra love, attention and care when they don’t feel their best so a long time is spent on the couch watching their favorite shows, just holding them and giving them a load of snuggles. This probably should have been the first point but I know when I was a little girl, I have core memories of my mom taking care of me, sitting with me, and just letting me rest for hours on end on the couch. As an adult I’m still grateful for those times because I truly believe that played a big part in my recovery process. So if you can be there to show the love and care you little one needs in times of sickness, definitely be there and enjoy the time of doing absolutely nothing but resting with them.
Happy Healing!
