Here you will find a list of absolutely necessary Newborn Baby Essentials you NEED for your newborn in the first six months.
The baby product market can be pretty overwhelming with all the new this and that but the truth is you don’t NEED it all. Sometimes our budgets don’t allow for us to have it all either, and that’s okay. So let’s dive into what you really need the first six months of your babies life!

1.) Crib (not a bassinet)
A crib is an absolute must, you want to ensure your baby has a safe space to sleep that is free of blankets or anything else that could smother them. The only reason I recommend a crib and NOT a bassinet is because, your baby will quickly grow out of that bassinet and maybe get five to six months worth of time using it. A crib can last YEARS especially if it’s one that is convertible*. This is definitely a Newborn Baby Essential!
2.) Bottles + Brushes
Baby Bottles are always necessary even if you think you will be exclusively breastfeeding. These bottles can be used for giving baby milk you have pumped or serving formula! The brushes are an essential part of purchasing bottles because you must clean them thoroughly to prevent germs and bacteria from growing in the bottles.
3.) Car Seat
If you are living in the United States car seats are required for anyone leaving the hospital with a baby. Besides this being a requirement, if you know about the car accident rate in America you will have your child in a car seat for safety and peace of mind. Plus depending on what car seat you select you can use it, when running errands or grocery shopping. It may be easier to keep baby in the car seat if they are asleep while you shop.
4.) Onesies & Pajamas
From short sleeve to long sleeve options to zip up to snaps get as many of these as you need for all year round. The onesies and pajamas I have linked are the ones I used or most similar to them as the long sleeve versions have built in mittens or hand covers! This is a life savor for when you don’t want anyone to touch babies hands or don’t want baby to scratch their face!
5.) Infant Tub
Bathing your newborn will be a very regular occurence, having a tub to properly bathe them is a must! If we are talking budget friendly baby essentials, I highly recommend the Frida Baby 4 in 1 grow with me baby tub. As much as I love the little flower sink bath cushion tub, it will only last so long then you’ll end up buying another. Purchase something like the 4 in 1 tub so you can use it for a year or more!
6.) Muslin Cloth
Huge fan of Muslin cloths! Specifically these ones! Muslin clothes can be used for multiple purposes so I consider them to be a great bang for your buck! I’ve used them for bathing my newborn, covering the car seat to protect my baby from germs, as a burp cloth and a quick changing mat! I’m sure there are many more uses but these are the ones that I’ve used them for! Rather than purchasing these items all separately let the muslin cloths be your multi-purpose tool! Oh and how could I forget, you can use them to cover you while you are nursing too!
7.) Nail File Kit
Babies nails will grow extremely fast and are paper thin so it’s important to have something to trim those nails on hand. You’ll see I’m not suggesting nail clippers, that’s because we had an incident where our daughters nails were getting clipped and her finger got clipped too. This was overwhelming for me as it looked like quite a bit of blood was lost. All turned out fine and the finger healed quickly BUT I wouldn’t wish that experience for anyone. If you insist on using clippers I would recommend these but I’d suggest waiting until your baby is at least one year old when their nails are a bit firmer!
8.) Breast Pump
Another one of those Newborn Baby Essentials, because baby has to eat right? If you intend to nurse I definitely suggest and swear by this breast pump, when I purchased it through my insurance it didn’t come with the hands free pumps, so that addition is really awesome! But this pump can fit in a small backpack or diaper bag! It can be charged at home and then can be used portably, it’s not light weight but it’s not heavy! It also has a night light feature too for those middle of the night pump sessions!
9.) Baby Hygiene products
This goes along with the baby tub, bathing your newborn will happen a lot. If skin sensitivities run in your family I highly recommend Tubby Todd for bath time body wash and shampoo. Their products may seem higher than the average baby bath products but they last a long time as a little goes a long way. The scents are extremely light and with eczema running in my family heavily, we were pleased that this product was gentle enough for our kids skin.
10.) Thermometer
When it comes to Newborn Baby Essentials this my Favorite Thermometer. We don’t like to think about it but babies get sick sometimes. This thermometer takes your babies temperature and keeps a record of it for you! This thermometer connects to an app on your phone and gives you feedback on next steps from Treat at home to Call the doctor and more.
11.) Diaper bag or Backpack
You can use a backpack or get a diaper bag it doesn’t matter but if you are feeling fancy…This diaper bag I’ve linked is higher priced than the average diaper bag but when you look at all the features it is WELL worth it! It will definitely hold all your Newborn Baby Essentials! I personally have all three versions of this bag. I was gifted the Ayla Bag after having it on my baby registry with my first. Then after my second was born I realized I needed the mini because having a giant diaper bag and two under two was A LOT! Then when my youngest hit one I got the fanny pack for their essentials and put my oldest items in a little back pack she could carry! Also check out their outlet section, minor blemishes on the bags but for a reduced price!
Bonus items I’d get or would suggest on a Registry in addition to diapers + wipes:
Baby Carrier
High Chair
Playmat or Play Pen
Before I wrap things up here are a few notes about the items I mentioned:
Convertible cribs
They can last for children all the way up to past five years of age. When purchasing a convertible crib be sure to purchase the additional parts to transform the bed to a twin bed etc at the same time. We didn’t do this and found out the hard way that the parts and color of parts we needed were no longer being made. Lastly a regular size crib can fit a baby for up to three years typically. We had purchased a mini crib, and loved it but we also transitioned our kiddos out of cribs by 18 months!
Glass Bottles
While plastic bottles seem to be the norm, glass bottles can be extremely beneficial when it comes to sterilizing them. Along with sterilizing they are easier to heat in my opinion without the concern of chemicals from the plastic leaking into babies milk! These bottles come with a sleeve to provide an extra cushion from breakage
Wishing you the happiest newborn season,
With Love,
xx Classically Faith xx
