Here I will give you the details on Potty Training Out of the House. From my personal experience this is the hardest part of potty training, it requires a high level of patience, even more than what is needed for at home potty training. With preparation, patience and expectancy, I know you will help your child thrive through this part.
1.) Expect to be Inconvenienced
Leaving the house with a child who is potty training is adding a new set of expectations for them. So prepare to be inconvenienced when continuing the journey by Potty Training outside of the house. The inconveniences can begin from the moment you walk out of the door. The bladder has a mind of its own and even for adults there are times we find ourselves rushing to the bathroom. Your child’s bladder is no different, especially when they are easily distracted or focused on other things. I encourage you to expect to be inconvenienced so that you aren’t overwhelmed and frustrated by it. What once felt like a simple outing, will now feel like a daunting task. There is a light at the end of this tunnel, so don’t be discouraged.
2.) Don’t reintroduce diapers
The easiest option would be for you to put your child back in a diaper when in the car, BUT do NOT do it! There seems to be a level of comfort associated with the diaper, that could potentially revert your child back into wanting the “freedom” of peeing whenever and wherever when you place them in a diaper. Naturally we all attempt to organize our days, set up things in hopes of reducing risk and potential accidents that turn into inconveniences. When Potty Training out of the house, you have to embrace all the risks that come with it.There will be accidents, rushing to the restroom and the false alarms. These incidents will surely make you want to switch your child back to a diaper or try potty training later. Please don’t!
3.) Things that make Potty Training out of the House easier
So you are mentally prepared to be inconvenienced, you even realize that going back to diapers isn’t an option! Now let’s talk about things that can help you to be ready for al things “Potty Training out of the house”.
The Out of the House Potty Training Essentials:
- Car seat/Stroller seat protector (For Potty Training)is something we wish we found much sooner! The amount of times our carseat had to be removed, disassembled and put back together, made potty training a chore before we found this! Plus it’s universal and fits in your stroller too!!
- Travel Toilet Seat Cover MY FAVORITE of them all!!! Public Restrooms can typically be unsanitary, meaning toilet seats are also. This seat fits onto the toilet with little suction grips underneath. It also turns the toilet seat into a toddler sized seat so you don’t have to worry about your little one falling in the toilet.
- Extra Training Pants are an essential to have when leaving the house, because accidents can, do and will happen especially in the first month of taking your Potty Training out of the House! You honestly can’t ever have too many! Along with an extra pair of clothes, socks and shoes ( sometimes pee will trickle down and get into shoes and socks).
- Extra Flushable Wipes It feels silly even mentioning this but I’ll always be REAL, have you ever used public restroom toilet paper…trust me you’ll need to bring the wipes!
- Sanitizing Wipes Favorite sanitizing wipes, they smell divine and they give this Mama peace of mind. Sometimes you don’t know where you are going to take your little one to potty. If you are at an outside event, it just might be a Porta-Potty! Keep some Sanitizing wipes with you at all times, TRUST ME!
- Sanitizing Hand Spray , same point as the Sanitizing wipes. But not every restroom you go into will be fully equipped or stocked with soap. Do your do diligence to continue all to potty training steps from home when out and “wash” your child’s hands. Even if it’s with sanitizer when soap is unavailable.
- Here is a Bonus item a travel potty that is great for road trips or long distance travel. For when your child just can’t hold it.
4.) Don’t give up

I hope you feel better prepared to walk through the Potty Training journey with Patience and Perseverance.
